Carrier Edition

Carrier Edition is the commercial version of Funambol for service providers that want the capabilities and benefits of Funambol's premier solution. Carrier Edition differs from the open source Community Edition in four significant ways -- it:

provides a superset of functionality that makes it suitable for mass deployment. For example, it includes a portal that automates over-the-air configuration of mobile devices
is certified on commercial infrastructure such as commercial RDBMSs (e.g. Oracle) that enable it to be deployed in massively scalable and high availability environments
is covered by a commercial license agreement that enables customers to maintain the privacy of their code
is used as part of Funambol professional service engagements and is supported by Funambol

Carrier Edition v9 Adds Mobile Sign-up and Portal Localization

Version 9 is the latest release of Funambol's flagship mobile cloud software. It provides new mobile clients for iPhone and Android and two new Carrier-Edition capabilities for mobile sign-up and portal localization.

Mobile sign-up enables users to create an account on the Funambol Portal via their mobile device in three easy steps, without needing to enter the portal. This is convenient while people are on-the-go or where they do not have access to a desktop. Funambol v9 provides mobile sign-up for smartphones, including iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile. For other platforms, users are directed to the portal. The screenshot below provides an example of how mobile sign-up works on an iPhone. Note that the process auto-detects the user's platform and works for existing (not just new) users.

Version 9 also enables the Funambol Portal to be translated and made available to end users in multiple languages. It provides the framework to support multiple languages and can detect the preferred language for users based on browser and user profile settings. The portal is available in multiple Western languages and provides the infrastructure to enable others to add languages as needed.

Licensing and Support

Funambol Carrier Edition is offered under a commercial license that enables customers to adapt and alter the software to their needs and infrastructure without needing to share their changes. In addition, source code for some major components of Carrier Edition, such as the portal, are available only to Carrier Edition customers and are not open source.
